A few years back, I photographed a senior that was an aerialist. To watch her perform was mesmerizing. I thought it would be so cool if I had my own rig, to photograph aerialists. While researching aerial equipment, I saw that it would also be possible to put someone in a harness and bungee, and let them run and fly. I WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE FLY!!! (squeals with excitement)
So, on a whim (which is practically everything I do) I got the rig and harness and bungee, as well as silks, and a lyra (hoop).
Set it all up but soon realized that you are limited with what poses you can do with the rig. You really can't hook up the bungee and harness and you don't have much room to fly. To do it properly and safely, you need to have it professional installed/rigged onto a steel beam. The only steel beam that I had was the one above the studio's ceiling grid. Soooooooooooo...
I've always loved the look of exposed ceilings. I knew I was about to take on a BIG project but the thought of letting people fly was SO exciting to me!
The project began last November. It took more than 9 months to be completed because, of course, things go wrong, projects stall, etc. I had to take down the ceiling grid and totally redo the HVAC ductwork. Of course, I had to have the pretty spiral steel ductwork. The company gave me a start date. They came in and took down most of the the ceiling grid and then said they were stalled because they were waiting on the steel ductwork. Meanwhile, I had EVERYTHING taken out of the studio already. So, I had to wait for over a month...while my studio was in shambles.
One thing after the other, went wrong. It was such a frustrating process. I try not to badmouth companies but these guys were the worst. Do NOT hire Hybrid Air!
So, the ductwork was FINALLY finished and then I had to have the ceiling and ductwork painted. Then, I had to replace all of the light fixtures but I had to find track lighting that was daylight balanced light (meaning: not tinted with color). This was not as easy as it sounds.
So, all of this, so I can let people fly and take magical photos of them! (yes, I'm a little obsessed but boy is it PRETTY?!)
Everyone deserves a chance to fly!
