The Fearless Spirit Project
About 8 years ago, I started hearing from EVERY mother of a middle school girl, how their self-confidence plummeted when they reached middle school. This is when girls start to be mean and bully other girls. Their once out-going child, was now shy, sad, guarded and kept to themselves most of the time. And then, add Covid anxiety on top of that. They have a lot stacked against them. Parents can only do so much.
"Parents can tell them, until they’re blue in the face, how beautiful and special they are, but teens need something more."
Having self-confidence at this time in their life is vital for building a strong person, that will believe in themselves and succeed at their life goals. I began Fearless Spirit Model Crew for girls 12-16 years old, who are really struggling with their self-confidence and anxiety. This is a totally different approach to help teens. Applicants are selected to "Model" for Storybook Studios. This is NOT based on looks. They get to participate in 7 monthly fun and artistic group sessions.
By seeing beautiful images of themselves, over and over, for 7 months, they start to see how beautiful they are and how cool it is to be unique and stand out from the crowd.

I can’t tell you how profoundly this experience has positively impacted her. She has grown this year and has gained so much confidence. Thank you for helping her see the beauty and strength she carries inside. ~Caroline's Mom
This photo session was amazing!!! We are in love with the photos. Ella had one of the best experiences of her life doing this shoot. We look at the pictures and videos a lot. I love that the video shows her Humor and her playful side. It is something I will never forget! ~Ella's Mom
From start to finish this journey has been amazing for Addison. I never thought I would hear her say she liked a picture of herself. That alone, is priceless to me. Thank you for helping all of the girls see what we see in them. They are all beautiful. ~Addison's Mom
Model Crew Photo Shoots
My Little World Crew Photo Shoot
I had the Fearless Spirit Model Crew make their "own little world" dioramas, using objects from my fairy gardens, miniature set pieces and all the artsy and strange things that I have in the studio. I photographed the girls on just a white backdrop. As usual, I made them do really strange poses...and as usual, they gave me a hard time and laughed a lot. Then, I had those images printed and we cut them out like paper dolls.
Stay with me here!
I placed each of their paper dolls in their "own little world" diorama and then photographed each one. I created my own clouds out of cotton. I made the beautiful colored skies with colored gels, placed over my lights. It was so much fun making everything so over-the-top and colorful. I didn't care if anything "made sense".
The Very First Fearless Spirit Model Crew Session
The video below is a "behind the scenes" video of the very first Fearless Spirit Model Crew session. Some of these girl's were so shy they couldn't even speak to me, the first time that I met them. I asked the girls what are the names or phrases that bullies called them. We wrote those words on their skin. I also asked them to pick out a temporary tattoo that they related to. We put the tattoo on them as well. I photographed them individually and at the end of each girl's turn, I asked her to wipe off the word or phrase they had been called...leaving the positive words on them. Powerful.
One Year Later...
Over the year, I concentrated on teaching these girls to be proud of who they were, even if others ridiculed them for it.
For example: Amber was joked for being too tall...so, I made her even taller in these portraits. Victoria was called "Good girl in a bad way" (Goody-Goody), so I made her look strong and powerful. I photographed them, in front of hundreds of people, at a carnival. They weren't scared and not one of them cared what people thought of them. They came SO far. To stand up with their head held high and proud of all of the quirks and scars and ALL of things about them that had been ridiculed before. They OWNED it! These girls changed my life.
